World AIDS Day: Portraits of 2 advocates living with HIV

Excerpted from a Story by the Journal News:

Dawn Kittell remembers the day she learned she was HIV positive.

“It was 1992, and I was 27,” she said. “I expected it because of the way I was living, but, when I heard the words, ‘You’re positive,’ I was numb.”

That was 18 years ago.

After years of severe depression and substance abuse, Kittell, 45, has dedicated her life to speaking to others about the virus.

“I don’t need the drugs anymore. Advocacy is my high,” she said with a smile.
