Key Question #2:
Is Addiction Treatable?
Yes, drug addiction is a treatable disease. As with diabetes or heart disease, people in treatment for drug addiction learn how to make behavioral changes and may be prescribed medications as part of their treatment regimen. Through sustained treatment that incorporates research-based components shown to be effective, patients can learn to live normal, productive lives1
Studies over the last 25 years have shown that treatment can not only effectively reduce drug and alcohol use but also can decrease criminal activity and mitigate a host of other health and social problems by increasing employment and productivity, promoting social stability and community well-being, and saving both the public and private sectors enormous amounts of money.2
