Legal Action Center Celebrates Record-Breaking Annual Benefit to Defend Dignity of Those We Serve

On October 16, 2018 Legal Action Center staff, Board, partners, and supporters joined at Tribeca Rooftop in New York City to honor two incredible individuals and raise awareness and funds for the Center’s important mission. Jay Balacek, Senior Vice President & Associate General Counsel at JPMorgan Chase & Co., was the recipient of this year’s Arthur Liman Public Interest Award, which recognizes those individuals who embody the ideals of LAC’s Founding Chairman, Arthur L. Liman, by excelling in their respective fields and demonstrating a commitment to the public good. J. Edward Shaw, Consultant, HIV/AIDS Advocate, and esteemed LAC Board Member, received the Edward J. Davis Community Service Award, which honors the memory of Ed Davis, former LAC staff attorney and beloved Board Member, and acknowledges those who share Ed’s vision of service and dedication to social justice. The entire room was captivated by the honorees’ powerful and gracious acceptance speeches, which both stressed the vital work LAC is doing to dismantle discriminatory barriers that deny too many Americans the access to care, opportunity, and resources they need and deserve to lead healthy, productive, dignified lives.

Thanks to our fantastic Honorees, Benefit Chairs, Co-Chairs, event sponsors, and individual donors, we were able to raise over a million dollars to fund our mission! Together, we will continue to guard the civil rights and liberties of those unfairly discriminated against in our country because of a past criminal record, substance use disorder, and/or HIV/AIDS. This support is crucial as we build capacity to rise to the challenges of our time. As we reflect on this phenomenal event, we extend our immense gratitude to ALL those who contributed and look forward to building upon this momentum as we continue our work to defend dignity for all.
