New York, NY (Jan 12, 2015) – The Legal Action Center bids the fondest of farewells to our wonderful Co-Director of Policy Tracie M. Gardner, who was just appointed by Governor Andrew Cuomo to be Assistant Secretary of Health. Governor Cuomo could not have made a better choice. Tracie has done a fantastic job for LAC for more than 14 years, directing LAC’s New York State policy work and for the past year also co-directing all of our policy advocacy. Tracie’s accomplishments are enormous and broad, including leading advocacy campaigns that won substantial increases in funding for substance use, HIV and alternatives to incarceration and reentry services, landmark HIV confidentiality and testing legislation, and landmark criminal justice reforms. She is a member of the New York State AIDS Advisory Council and the Governor’s Ending the Epidemic Task Force, and created LAC’s Women’s Initiative to Stop HIV (WISH-NY). Tracie has also played a critical role in strengthening LAC’s external communications and internal operations. Equally important, she has been an absolutely joy to have around.
Words cannot describe how much we will miss Tracie. LAC congratulates Tracie and wishes her the best of luck in her new position. We have no doubt that she will do a great deal to help New Yorkers with substance use, HIV and other health issues, including those in the criminal justice system, and their families, friends and communities.
