WISH and YWCHAC Update: Summer 2011

“Who is the face of HIV?”
It was an easy question for the members of the Young Women of Color HIV/AIDS Coalition (YWCHAC), whose very existence speaks volumes, as does their stellar performance on the “What Do You Know” quiz given by Tiffany Patterson of Health Education and Alternatives for Teens (HEAT)—herself a former YWCHAC member. Tiffany’s session, part of YWCHAC’s Summer Advocacy Institute, is only the beginning for this brand-new crop of 24, who will learn about civics, participatory action research, and much more in the coming weeks. Recent sessions have included an intro to lobbying by John Wright of the Wright Group, and Advocacy 101, by WISH founder Tracie Gardner. |

WISH and YWCHAC have also teamed up with fellow members of the Sexuality Education Alliance of New York City in a letter to New York Schools Chancellor Chancellor Dennis M. Walcott urging him to implement age-appropriate and medically accurate sexuality and HIV/STI prevention education.
Meanwhile, the fifth YWCHAC class celebrated its graduation this summer after years of learning, advocacy and personal growth. Check out a sampling from the count down to the End of the Year Celebration, where 16 members graduated and moved on higher education:
