This year’s conference will focus on gender-responsive models and practices for reducing recidivism and improving the well-being of women directly impacted by the criminal justice system, specifically:
- Key trends concerning women and the criminal justice system;
- Personal experiences of women who have successfully navigated the transition from incarceration to reintegration;
- Why trauma-informed approaches to policy and practice are essential to the success and well-being of women directly impacted by the criminal justice system;
- How women directly impacted by the criminal justice system actively participate in the movement to change the systems and policies that impact their lives; and,
- How you can make a difference.

The conference keynote speaker will be Brenda V. Smith (at left), Professor of Law at the Washington College of Law at American University. Professor Smith is the Principal Investigator and Project Director for the Project on Addressing Prison Rape and the Building Capacity Project. In 2003, Professor Smith was appointed by Representative Nancy Pelosi (D-California), now the speaker of the house, to serve on the National Prison Rape Elimination Commission by the United States House of Representatives, an appointment she held until 2009. Prior to her joining the faculty at the Washington College of Law, Professor Smith was Senior Counsel for Economic Security at the National Women’s Law Center and Director of its Women in Prison and Child and Family Support Projects. |
| The closing speaker will be Patrice Gaines, right, an author, freelance journalist, writing teacher and motivational speaker who tells her story at colleges, conferences, prisons and drug rehabilitation programs around the country. She is a restorative justice trainer and a “justice reform activist,” who encourages discussions on forgiveness in her lectures and coaxes people to redefine “justice.” She is also co-founder of the Brown Angel Center, with headquarters in Charlotte, N.C., which offers services and products nationwide aimed at healing and empowering women and teenage girls. | ![]() |
