NEW YORK, April 28, 2011 -- The Legal Action Center is honored to announce that the New York City AIDS Fund has awarded a $30,000 grant to support our advocacy and policy work. With this generous continuation of support, NYCAF will help LAC monitor implementation of the state’s new HIV-testing regulations and educate policymakers about the needs of women living with or at risk of the disease.

“We are so pleased to be a more than 12-year grantee of the New York City AIDS Fund,” said Tracie Gardner, LAC’s director of state policy and the founder of its Women's Initiative to Stop HIV/AIDS (WISH-New York). “With its support, we have been able to play a leadership role on clean-syringe access, HIV-testing policy issues and the impact of HIV/AIDS on women and girls of color.”

The Legal Action Center’s grant is among 26 awarded to New York City organizations by the NYCAF in the New York Community Trust.

“With our multi-pronged approach of simultaneously funding improvements in policy, treatment, and organizational management, we can control the spread of a disease that once ravaged our city and improve the lives of those infected,” said Len McNally, chairman of the AIDS Fund and program director for health and people with special needs at The Trust, in announcing a total of $1.3 million in grants.

The Legal Action Center sincerely thanks NYCAF for its support and looks forward to continuing this critical work.

The Legal Action Center is the only public interest law and policy organization in the United States whose sole
mission is to fight discrimination against and protect the privacy of people in recovery from alcohol or drug addiction,
individuals living with HIV/AIDS, and people with criminal records.
